Generally, everyone in this country has civil rights protected by law. Civil rights can be separated into two categories. The first is one's constitutional rights. That is our right to be free from government intrusion. The Amendments to the US Constitution set out these rights. Such as the 1st Amendment right to free speech, the 14th Amendment right of Equal protection under the law for race, gender, religion and national origin In addition, the Indiana constitution guarantees similar rights. However, these rights protect you only from governmental activity. The second category of civil rights are the rights enacted by Congress to be free from discrimination in the work place, in education, in public accommodation, housing and contracts. The rights created by these statutes cover various types of discrimination, like age, disability, race and sex. Indiana has state statutes which give similar rights as well.

If you believe that your civil rights have been violated, you may need legal advice to seek a remedy.
